Oral Cancer Screenings
Oral cancer screenings are an important part of preventive dental care. During a routine examination, the Ablantis Dental team visually and physically checks the lips, tongue, gums, cheeks, throat, and other oral tissues for unusual changes. These examinations cannot diagnose cancer, but they can help identify areas that may require prompt evaluation, biopsy, or referral to a specialist.
What is Oral Cancer?
Oral cancer can develop in the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, hard or soft palate, throat, and other oral tissues. Risk factors may include tobacco use, heavy alcohol use, certain human papillomavirus (HPV) infections, age, and prolonged sun exposure to the lips, although oral cancer can also occur in people without obvious risk factors.
During a screening, we review relevant health history and examine the mouth, jaw, and neck for tissue changes. If we find a suspicious area, we will explain the next steps and may recommend a prompt biopsy or referral. Only a biopsy and laboratory evaluation can confirm a diagnosis.
What are the major symptoms of oral cancer?
Possible warning signs include a sore that does not heal, a red or white patch, a lump or thickened area, persistent hoarseness or sore throat, difficulty chewing or swallowing, unexplained bleeding, numbness, or a change in how your teeth or dentures fit. These symptoms can have many causes, but any persistent or concerning change should be professionally evaluated.
