What Are Dental Sealants?
A dental sealant is a tooth-colored or clear resin applied to the pits and grooves of a molar or premolar. These areas can retain food and plaque even with careful brushing. After the tooth is cleaned and prepared, the sealant material is painted onto the enamel and hardened. Treatment is conservative, does not require removing healthy tooth structure, and is generally completed in a short visit. Sealants supplement daily brushing, flossing, fluoride exposure, and regular dental care; they do not replace those preventive measures.
Who May Benefit From Dental Sealants?
Sealants are commonly considered soon after adult molars erupt, when those teeth may be particularly vulnerable to decay. Teens and adults with deep grooves, difficulty keeping molars clean, a history of cavities, dry mouth, or other risk factors may also benefit. Dr. Claudia Cortadi will examine the tooth, confirm that it is suitable for sealing, and explain whether a sealant is appropriate. Existing sealants are checked during routine exams and may occasionally need repair or replacement.
